About this Project

The site bisected a municipal right-of-way and comprised two parcels of land totaling 5.7 hectares (14 acres). The objective of the project was to convert the land from an automotive salvage yard to a property designated for residential development via rezoning process. To satisfy the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and other regulatory authorities, soils on the site property had to be remediated to meet Table 2 criteria.

Remediation Process

The soil containing debris was excavated and taken to the processing area where the debris was manually and mechanically extracted for disposal/recycling. Nexxgen’s waste processing ECA was used to screen the waste materials. After processing, the remaining soil was stockpiled and tested for reuse. Soils meeting the applicable site criteria were reused. The soils that exceeded the criteria were transported off the property to an approved waste receiver. Any materials that could be recycled (e.g., wood and metal), were separated and sent for recycling.

To complete the work program, acceptable clean fill material was imported and used as backfill in the approved excavated voids.

The Outcome

The property of interest was successfully remediated and rezoned for residential use such that development could commence.
