About this Project
The Site, a 2.7-hectare facility, historically contained several underground storage tanks (USTs) for diesel and waste oil storage with significant petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) impacts to both soil, bedrock and groundwater.
Remediation Process
The remedial strategy/goal for the Site involved removal of the continuing source of groundwater PHC impacts, including residual and free-phase product via excavation and off-Site disposal of the impacted soil in direct contact with groundwater beneath the building. The weathered bedrock in select areas was saw-cut, hammered and excavated for off-Site disposal. Temporary pumping sumps were installed and accumulating impacted groundwater was vacuumed and disposed off-Site to a licensed receiving facility. Any materials that could be recycled (e.g., concrete and metal), were separated and sent for recycling.
To complete the work program, acceptable clean fill material was imported and used as backfill around injection infrastructure in the approved excavated void.
Subsequent combinations of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remedial strategies followed by the application of in-situ bioremediation to mitigate potential off-site groundwater impacts.
The Outcome
The interior area of interest was successfully remediated and the facility was divested.
